Helen J Gallery presents Mt. Kumgang: Nature of the Peninsula, a screening of artist-activist Jae Hwan Lim’s video work Mt. Kumgang. It will be accompanied by a roundtable discussion with Namhee Lee (Director, UCLA Center for Korean Studies), Jongdae Kim (Executive Director, Re’Generation Movement), and Lim (Director, Humans of North Korea). In the roundtable discussion, panelists will highlight the history and politics of access to the Northern part of the Korean peninsula and address how it shaped our perception of nature and people in North Korea. Panelists will also discuss the impact of U.S. politics over South and North Korea and suggest possible peaceful measures for the Korean Peninsula.
About the Panelists:
Namhee Lee is an associate professor of modern Korean history at the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Asian Languages and Culture. Lee also serves as the Director of the UCLA Center for Korean Studies. She is currently working on a book project entitled “Social Memory and Public History in South Korea.” Her publications include The Making of Minjung: Democracy and the Politics of Representation in South Korea (Cornell University Press, 2007).
Jongdae Kim is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Re’Generation Movement. He founded the organization with a mission to educate diasporic youth refugees and immigrants. Kim is the descendent of former President Kim Dae-jung and his family who temporarily sought asylum in the US in the 1970-80s. Kim has recently organized the annual Diaspora Dialogue, which aimed to practice universal humanism through diasporic consciousness.
Jae Hwan Lim is an artist-activist focusing on human rights and the struggles for democracy in the Korean Peninsula. He is the founder and Director of Humans of North Korea, an organization advocating for North Korean defectors and global citizenship. Lim is currently working on a long-term social practice project (Co)-rea, while experiencing physical and ideological borders and finding the political meaning of being Korean in contemporary society.

헬렌제이 갤러리는 <한반도의 자연, 금강산>이라는 제목으로 비디오 상영회와 원탁 토론회를 개최한다. 이남희 교수 (UCLA 한국학 연구소장), 김종대 대표 (리제네레이션 무브먼트) 그리고 행동주의 예술가 임재환 (Humans of North Korea 대표)과 진행되는 본 토론회는 금강산 관광의 역사와 정치성, 그리고 이러한 역사적 사실이 북한의 자연과 사람들을 향한 이미지를 어떻게 바꿔 왔는지 논의한다. 또한 미국 정치가 남북한에 끼치는 영향과 한반도를 위한 평화적 접근법에 대해 다양한 담론을 펼친다.
패널리스트 소개:
이남희는 캘리포니아 대학교 로스앤젤레스 캠퍼스 아시아 언어 및 문화학 현대 한국사 부교수이며 UCLA 한국학 연구소 소장이다. 그는 현재 ‘대한민국의 사회적 기억과 공적 역사 Social Memory and Public History in South Korea’라는 제목의 책을 집필 중이다. 또한 ‘민중만들기-한국의 민주화운동과 재현의 정치학 (후마니타스, 2015)’ 등 다양한 책을 출판했다.
김종대는 리제네레이션 무브먼트의 공동 창립자 및 대표다. 그는 디아스포라 청소년 난민과 이민자들을 교육하고자 하는 미션으로 단체를 창립했다. 대한민국 정부의 정치적 탄압으로 1970-80년대 미국에 은신해야 했던 조부 고 김대중 전 대통령과 가족의 역사가 있으며 최근 ‘디아스포라 다이얼로그’를 주최해 디아스포라적 사유로 보편적 인류애를 실천하고자 한다.
임재환은 한반도에서 일어나는 인권 억압과 민주주의를 향한 고투를 다루는 행동주의 예술가이며 북한이탈주민의 정착을 돕고 세계 시민권을 지지하는 단체 Humans of North Korea의 책임자다. 그는 현재 사회참여예술 프로젝트 ‘(Co)-rea’를 진행해 국가와 사람들 사이 물질적, 이념적 경계를 경험하며 현대 사회에서 한국인으로 살아가는 정치적 의미를 질문한다.
