MATTHEW LANGLEYb. 1963, Virginia. based in New York.
Matthew Langley (b. 1963) is an American contemporary artist whose work is captivating for its brilliant colors, dramatic compositions, and meditative depth.
Langley's paintings showcase his exceptional use of color and his ability to create a sense of balance and unity through the use of space and color. Through the use of literary titles and visual narratives, his pieces establish a serene atmosphere that invites viewers to engage in observation, contemplation, and introspection.
Color exploration has gradually become the central focus of Langley’s work. This approach to color is based on my professional expertise, relying on my extensive knowledge rather than rigidly following color theory. The result of the work reflects a clear and transparent understanding of its creation process. His works are primarily improvised as he dives right in without any prepared sketches. He blends within the lines more easily by using the wet on wet approach with a stainer brush. This technique gives the harmonious balance and unity through the use of space and color. His primary theme, "Color Fields," consists of flat color lines that interact and blend together. Langley's works take viewers on a visual journey.
